Principal's Message

Parents,

The leaves are changing and fall is in the air. I can’t believe that October is upon us! I want to thank you all for your support with teachers and students. Because of you, we have had a successful start of the year.

Our school fundraiser kicked off last week and I want to thank you for your help. As you know, all the money for this fundraiser goes straight to the student’s classrooms for technology, fieldtrips or other activities. In order for a grade to go on a field trip, it usually costs around $400.00 for one bus. If the grade is bigger and requires two busses, the cost is double.

It is time again to schedule Parent-Teacher conferences for October 12-14, along with the bookfair. We will be sending home notices next week with the scheduled appointment times. Also a reminder, that fall break is on the 15th and 16th.

With the weather getting colder, I encourage you not to drop off your student until 8:15 or if they eat breakfast here at 8:00. Some students arrive at the school around 7:45 and there is no supervision outside that early in the morning. Please speak to your student also if they are walking to not arrive before 8:00. Thank you for your support on this matter

Please keep in contact with your teachers if you have any questions about your student, or you may contact me.

We have a great school and community….. Thank you for all you do!

Truly,

Mrs. Copeland

First Grade

We are thrilled with the progress of our first grade students! First grade is a big adjustment, but our first graders are pulling through with flying colors! Please continue to work on the key words (flash cards) we send home each week.  We are testing the children weekly on their knowledge of these words. The homework will become increasingly difficult as we move from the letters and sounds of the alphabet to letters that work together to make sounds. The practice you do at home with your child will help to reinforce the sounds that were taught that day at school.

In math we are working on addition and subtraction facts up to ten, and counting, recognizing and writing numbers up to 40. You may practice math with your first grader by talking about addition and subtraction stories that you see all around you, and by making a game of finding numbers while you are riding in the car.

We are excited to announce our first field trip of the year! We will be going to Hogle Zoo on November 6th. Parents are invited to attend, but due to bussing costs, we are asking parents to provide their own transportation to the zoo. We will be sending home more information soon!

We would like to thank all the parents of our first graders! Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to your child read each night, and thank you for making sure the math homework is done correctly. The time you spend with your child now will benefit them so much in the future!

Have a happy and healthy October!

Second grade is off to a good start.  The students are working hard on our new math program engage NY. Parents may look at the program on the internet.  XMath is a wonderful program children can use at home that will help with their basic math skills.  Please help your child remember to bring back their library books on Tuesday along with their homework.  PE is on Wednesday so they will need appropriate shoes.  A special thanks for all those parents who take time to help in their child's classroom.Second grade is off to a good start. A special thanks for all those parents who take time to help in their child's classroom.

We are working hard to prepare for our Veteran’s Day show which will be on October 11th at 6:00 PM. We will also do a performance for the whole school on Monday, October 9th at 1:30 PM.  The students should be practicing their songs and speaking parts at home. They need to be working on putting together an outfit that they can wear for the performance. Please send pictures of family member who have served in the military to Mrs. Griffey’s email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Griffey.

In October we are learning our 3 times tables.  Students need to practice them daily.  Also, in the back of the homework folder is the new October Reading Log.  Students need to fill out what they read nightly onto this log.  Every Wednesday students bring home their Treasures Reading books.  After students read the story to an adult, that adult needs to sign the sheet on the inside cover.

On October 23rd we will be having a field trip to the Ice Sheet and Hill AFB Museum.   Parents are encouraged attend.  Please notate on the permission slip whether you will be coming.

Thanks,
The 3rd Grade Teachers.

Happy Harvest!

During the month of September, the students started NOVA, which we will have on most Fridays for the first half of the year.

Each month students will need to read and do a project on a novel.  The genre and project will be selected by the teachers and will be different for each class.  The information will go home the first week of the month, probably on Thursdays as it is our library day.  The genres for this month are: Atkinson-realistic fiction, Critchley-historical fiction, and Erickson-science fiction.  The students must finish reading the book and have the project (which should be completed at home or during study hall at school) completed and ready to present by October 28th.

We would like to thank all parents who have been helping with fluency.  If you signed up to help, please come at that time (or contact your child’s teacher to schedule a time).  We really appreciate it!

We also need volunteers for our Fall Festival (Party) on November 24th in the afternoon.  Please contact your child’s teacher if you are able to help, send supplies, or donate money.

Remember, please check and sign your student’s planner each night and check the portal weekly.

Thanks for your support from home!

Stampede to Read

Our first month of at-home reading logs is coming to an end today!  Please make sure your child takes their completed reading log back to school on October 1st!!  Remember, it has to be in on time for students to be rewarded.  A new reading log will be coming home, so you can start working on reading 400 minutes for the month of October!  We would love to reward every student in every class for reading at home… please help your child reach their goal.  READING HOMEWORK COUNTS FOR READING MINUTES!  So, don’t forget to add those important minutes to the reading log each day.  Thanks for all your hard work…we can’t wait to see how many reading logs come back!!
