Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Our school and district is continually making improvements for your child’s safety. Each month, we practice a specific drill to help the students feel ready for any type of emergency. With safety being at the forefront, it is imperative that you sign in at the office in order to go through the school, to your child’s classroom.

Thank you so much for supporting our Parent-Teacher conferences this week. We always have such a great turnout and I know that you enjoy hearing about the growth of your student(s) as much as we like telling you about them.

I would like to thank the PTA for the book fair. They do such a wonderful job to encourage student participation. The book fair provides books for our library as well as our students being able to purchase new books of their choice. It was great seeing all our “loved ones” at the school last week to eat with

students. You are always welcome to come eat with your child. We want to thank all involved, especially our Cooks who do such a great job in the kitchen to provide services for all our students. A reminder about our air-quality flag, which is flying below the United States flag in front of our school

during January and February. The flag notify the community of the air quality each day. The flag colors correspond to the colors used in EPA’s Air Quality Index (AQI) which alerts how clean or polluted the air is for that day. The following are the state guidelines:

Green – Good Air Quality

Yellow – Moderate Air Quality

Orange – Unhealthy Air for sensitive groups (including all children and people with asthma) – Sensitive

groups should remain indoors for recess

Red - Unhealthy for everyone – sensitive students and students with respiratory symptoms should

remain indoors for recess

Purple – VERY unhealthy for everyone - All students stay in from recess

Thank you so much for all you do and we look forward to the rest of the school year!!!

First grade's newsletter submission:

We are looking forward to meeting with parents at Parent Teacher Conferences this week. This is a good time to focus on the progress and needs of our first grade students so we can all work together to ensure success on first grade concepts by the end of the year.

The homework will continue to increase in difficulty, with diphthongs such as au, aw, ou, ow, oi, and oy. We will begin to test fluency each week. We are working toward a goal of 50-60 correct words per minute by the end of first grade. Many of the words on the homework reading passages should be sight words and read fluently by your child. You can help your child's fluency improve by timing his/her reading of the homework passages for one minute. Then do a second one minute timing to see if your child improves. Try to make this a game so that it's fun.

In math, we are working on making groups of ten to help with adding and subtracting teen numbers. Please help your child memorize the “partners of 10”, such as: 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, and the equal partners 5 and 5. The children also need to know the “partners of 100”, such as 10 and 90, 20 and 80, and so forth. Please practice skip-counting with your child (counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s) as well. They should also be able to count by tens beginning with any number (3, 13, 23, 33, 43, etc.).

We will have fun talking about all the special days that we celebrate in February. We are excited to celebrate Valentine's Day! Class lists will be coming home soon so that you may begin addressing valentines. Please do not send valentines to school before Friday, February 12th. We will be making valentine holders in class so you do not need to make one at home.

Have a fabulous February!

Things are pretty busy in 3rd grade and we are learning tons!  Students need to keep practicing their recorders.  Remember to bring your recorders and music to school every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.  Our multiplication fact for the month of February is 7.  Please make sure to practice your 7x’s and read your 20 minutes every day.  We check reading logs and planners daily.  Please make sure planners get signed, and that book titles and reading minutes are logged daily.

A Student Market Day will be on Friday, February 5th.  Students need to have all of their assignments completed to attend.

Our Valentine’s Day Party will be Friday, February 12th at 1:30 pm.  If any parent or grandparent would like to come help, please let your student’s teacher know.

We would also like to send a big THANK YOU to those of you that were able to come on our Environmental Center Field Trip.  It was a great day and we were so glad you could come with us!

Thanks for your support,

The 3rd Grade Teachers
